CPSR for lip balms

A little of every lip balm gets swallowed. That changes the safety sums, and it limits which colours and flavours you can use.

  • Products for children under 3 are not taken at launch.
  • "Food grade" ingredients still need cosmetic documents. Food grade does not mean safe for cosmetics.

What we check

What makes lip balms different

Oral exposure

We assume some product is swallowed, and work out safety on that basis.

Colourants for lips

Only some colourants are allowed on lips and mucous membranes. Tints and micas are checked against those rules.

Flavours and essential oils

Fragrances and flavours must be suitable for lip use, which allows very little. Peppermint, cinnamon and citrus oils can irritate lips.

Rancidity and melting

Oils can turn rancid, and balms in pockets get warm. We consider stability and packaging.

Looks like food

Products that look or smell like sweets could be eaten by children. Shape, packaging and wording matter.

Questions

Lip balms: common questions

Can I use food flavouring in lip balm?

Possibly, but food grade alone is not enough. A flavour is assessed like a fragrance for lip use, so you will need its composition, allergen breakdown and any IFRA information from the supplier.

Which colourants can I use on lips?

Only colourants permitted for use on mucous membranes. Some colours allowed in soap or body products are not allowed on lips. We check each colourant and mica in your recipe.
